Last summer, I set out on a rather uncommon and uncertain career path. I chose to earn my income as a busking musician in the Metro system of Montreal, Quebec. And with one season already under my belt, I know one thing for sure: I know nothing at all of what will come my way this time around. Questions that may arise such as: "Will I make enough money to pay my rent?", "Will I be harassed?", and "What the hell am I doing?" will have no certain answer. But one thing I do know for sure is that I will have the truly unique experience of doing what I love and leaving the rest up to fate.
By the end of last summer, I had a slew of stories at my disposal with which to both excite and scare people. So many remarkable experiences occurred and I'm sure I've forgotten at least 40 per cent of them. Some of these experiences included both lovely as well as unsavoury encounters with passersby, moments where it was so windy I couldn't feel my fingers, many conversations with beggars, and even one near karate kick to the head by a completely unprovoked stranger. But each day was so wildly different, and karate kicks aside, I enjoyed most of it.
The busking season is nearly upon us and I will set off once more on this uncertain path- hopefully with money in the pocket and definitely with stories to share.
As I hope every day that there are people out there listening to the music I play, I hope that there are people out there who will read what I write.
Until next time,
Nica.
